The earlier float tests have all been for either parts of the Blacktip hull individually, or of the hull with only some of the internal and external hardware bolted into the hull. Today’s float test was for the entire hull – with everything but the electronics part of the ballast control system in place. Both of those subsystems are being actively revised so todays test was about confirming displacement weight and buoyancy for everything else was still within spec.
The major change since the last tests were the addition of the keel weights. This increases the mass of the hull significantly – but it did not significantly impact the trim, which was the concern. It also visibly improved the hull self-righting time, and rough water recovery, as intended. All in all it was an excellent day on the water.
Next steps will be loading the new electronics back into the hull for tests of surface operations.
